You know that moment when you finally hit Test Upgrade and the HTML drops into your inbox. You open it, scroll a little, and your stomach tightens.
Hundreds of warnings. Maybe a few errors. Sometimes a model or two that just… refused to cooperate.
It’s incredibly easy to treat that document like a report card. Like Revit just graded your files and handed you a big red F.
But the Test Upgrade Report isn’t a pass/fail. It’s not trying to fix anything for you, and it’s definitely not ranking your problems by importance. It’s simply Revit telling you, very bluntly, what will happen if you upgrade right now.
That’s why the report can feel like a crisis. And why it’s so easy to misread. Treat it as judgement and everything feels urgent and overwhelming. Treat it as evidence and it becomes one of the most useful artefacts in the entire upgrade process.
I don’t read these reports top to bottom. If you do, you’ll drown in noise before you ever get to the signal. I scan them in a very deliberate order.
It’s basically triage.

How I Scan the Report
1. Models that will block the upgrade
This is always first.
If a model cannot be upgraded, that’s not “one issue among many”. A single failure will prevent the entire project from upgrading.
People miss this all the time. They get distracted by warning counts and completely overlook the fact that one model failed outright.
If something fails at this level, it gets tackled first. Everything else is noise until that’s resolved. This is where you go back to your pre‑upgrade checklist and start working forward again, not sideways.
2. Elements that will be deleted
Not all errors are equal, and this is the most overlooked part of the report.
Errors that resolve themselves by deleting content are not “fine”. They’re Revit saying, “I can’t reconcile this, so I’m throwing it away.”
The important question here isn’t how many elements will be deleted.
It’s where those elements live.
- If they live on issued drawings, that matters.
- If they live in a working view that isn’t part of your deliverables, it probably doesn’t.
The report won’t tell you that. You have to interpret it. This is where experienced judgement beats automation every time. No tool can tell you whether a deletion is contractual risk or just digital housekeeping.
3. Everything else
Warnings, schema changes, regenerated geometry, this is where people tend to spiral.
Large numbers look scary, but they’re often just symptoms of the same underlying issue repeated across multiple models. One problematic family, loaded everywhere, echoing the same warning over and over.
This is the first major trap, confusing volume with severity.
If you don’t step back and look for common causes, you end up chasing symptoms while the real issue sits in the background, untouched.
The Decisions the Report Actually Drives

Once you’ve scanned it properly, the report forces a few very concrete decisions.
Can we just upgrade and run with it?
Sometimes the answer is yes. If the errors and warnings are understood, the deletions are acceptable, and the risk is contained, upgrading is often the least harmful option.
Waiting isn’t always safer.
Do we need to change content before upgrading?
Often the answer is also yes. The report is very good at exposing brittle families and legacy content that simply won’t survive the version jump.
This is where you decide whether to fix the problem upstream or accept the downstream cleanup.
Is there common content causing most of the pain?
This is where the report really earns its keep.
When you see the same issue appearing across many models, you’re no longer debugging models, you’re debugging specific content and modelling patterns. That’s a very different conversation, and usually a much smaller fix than the report initially suggests.
Does this justify time, budget, or delay?
This is the artefact you pull out when someone asks:
“Why can’t we just upgrade it this weekend?”
The report replaces gut feel with evidence. It lets you point to exactly what will break, where it lives, and why that matters. That makes it much easier to justify time, budget, or a staged approach, without the conversation becoming emotional.
Fitting This into Real Workflows
I see the same misreads over and over. People obsess over warning counts instead of blocking failures. They treat deletions like harmless clean‑ups. They skim instead of interrogating.
In the real world, you’ll probably run a test upgrade, tweak a few things, and run it again. That’s completely normal. This isn’t a one‑and‑done activity.
But conceptually, this is where all that prep work actually pays off. The checklist keeps you from walking into a minefield. The test upgrade hands you a detailed picture of what still needs attention.
Once you stop panicking over the report, the real work isn’t fixing every single error. It’s also not about upgrading your project every year instead of every few years. It’s learning what to fix and why, which will in turn help avoid the same problems in the future.
