Artificial intelligence (AI) tools like large language models (LLMs) can act as a double-edged sword in professional settings. They can be powerful \u201cforce multipliers\u201d<\/em> that enhance expert productivity but also risk amplifying the Dunning\u2013Kruger effect among less experienced users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When novices lean on AI-generated outputs without sufficient knowledge to validate them, the combination of AI\u2019s fluent, confident responses and users\u2019 limited expertise can foster an illusion of competence and inflated self-confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In extreme cases, people can produce authoritative-sounding reports or decisions using AI and believe they\u2019ve acquired expertise, even when the content is flawed. [academic.oup.com]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dunning\u2013Kruger in the Age of AI \u2013 What\u2019s Happening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The term Dunning\u2013Kruger effect<\/em> originates from social psychology, where people with limited ability commonly lack the metacognitive skill to recognize their own knowledge gaps, and thus vastly overrate their competence. It\u2019s a nearly universal bias across fields, from driving to science literacy, where low performers believe they\u2019re above average. This occurs because \u201cindividuals ignorant of their own ignorance\u201d<\/em> often don\u2019t know enough to detect errors in their understanding. Meanwhile, true experts have the opposite tendency. They grasp the complexity and nuance of a subject, so they assess themselves more cautiously, sometimes underestimating their relative skill. Generative AI such as ChatGPT add a new twist to this old bias. AI systems are extremely fluent and persuasive in their outputs. They produce grammatically perfect, confident explanations on almost any topic. For an unskilled or novice user, this can mask the limits of their own understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a person uses an LLM to create a technical document or solve a complex problem without possessing the requisite domain knowledge, the result may appear authoritative and detailed. However, because the novice lacks the background knowledge, they may not notice errors or omissions \u2013 so they mistakenly believe \u201cthe AI got it all right, so I must have done a good job\u201d. LLMs can give novices a false sense of expertise. The coworker that drafts a BIM Execution Plan entirely with an LLM, only to later discover it was \u201cgarbage\u201d<\/em> due to missing technical elements, exemplifies this phenomenon. They did not know what a good BEP looked like, so the AI\u2019s smooth prose felt convincing, reinforcing the user\u2019s overconfidence. [thedecisionlab.com]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research shows how LLM outputs often sound correct even when they\u2019re wrong. One commentator vividly noted that today\u2019s AI \u201cdoesn’t just give you wrong answers. It gives you confident, well-reasoned, articulate wrong answers that sound exactly like what an expert would say\u201d<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This authoritative tone can obscure the boundaries of a novice\u2019s actual skill, making it hard to tell how much of the answer comes from genuine understanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key Studies on AI, Overconfidence, and Metacognition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Several studies and analyses have examined how AI influences user confidence and competency across different contexts. The table below summarises key research findings that illuminate the AI-augmented Dunning\u2013Kruger<\/em> phenomenon:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Actual scores improved slightly (by ~3 points on average), but self-rated scores overshot by ~4 points. Those with higher AI knowledge showed worse calibration, i.e. the most \u201cAI literate\u201d participants were the most overconfident. Mitigating AI-Amplified Overconfidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Generative AI can make novices feel like instant experts, while even experienced professionals aren\u2019t immune to its confidence\u2011boosting influence. The risk isn\u2019t that AI will replace experts, it\u2019s that it makes non\u2011experts sound indistinguishable from them, and organisations start acting on how things sound rather than how well they\u2019re understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The response isn\u2019t to ban AI or shame people for using it. It\u2019s to strengthen the habits that keep confidence calibrated. That means slowing down where uncertainty is high, encouraging verification over first answers, and making it normal to ask who is accountable for correctness, not just delivery. It also means designing AI use so people have to explain and justify outputs, rather than simply forwarding them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI works best as a competent assistant, not an all\u2011knowing oracle. It can accelerate drafting and pattern recognition, but it cannot confer understanding. The implication is that as fluency gets cheaper, judgement becomes the scarce resource. Faster drafting, quicker answers.\n\nBut there\u2019s another aspect that\u2019s harder to spot. AI doesn\u2019t just help people do things. It helps them sound like they understand things.\n\nOne of the core ideas behind the Dunning\u2013Kruger effect is that the least skilled people aren\u2019t just worse at the task, they\u2019re also worse at judging how well they\u2019re doing. The same knowledge you need to perform well is the knowledge you need to evaluate performance.\n\nGenerative AI pours fuel on that fire. It produces fluent, structured, confident explanations by default. If you hold the domain expertise, you can spot what\u2019s missing. If you don\u2019t, what the AI generates can feel indistinguishable from real knowledge.\n\nThis is where things can get tricky.\n\nMost of us can spot weak thinking inside our own domain. Outside of it, we often rely on proxies such as confidence, polish and alignment language, and AI is very good at generating all of those.\n\nNon-experts start to sound the same as experts, and decisions get made on how things sound, not how well they're understood.\n\nIn #digital, #data, and #BIM, an area that is well known for \"if you ask 100 people what BIM is, you'll get 100 different answers\" you can see how this starts to become quite the problem.\n\nThis isn't an argument against AI.
